Costa Rica..

I have been up since 1. I just can't seem to get the time right. The Sun is up by 5. The View outside is lovely. Get some work done and get ready for my first day out in Costa Rica..
The packaged tour that I have paid for picks you up and drops you back at the hotel. We start at 7:00 AM. There are about 10 others. Sit upfront . Makes me feel like am driving the bus.
The Steets of Costa Rica

Out first Stop is the Doka Estate. The guide explains how coffee is made. The more you roast the beans the less the caffeine. Talks a little about the different Blends. Here in Costa Rica the seeds are hand picked as opposed to whats done with machines in Brazil and other countries like Columbia. The estate makes eight different kinds of coffee.
Coffee Estates
A Lesson in Cofee Making

Picture shows the samplings which are less than a year old. Coffee is often grown with Banana which protects it from the winds. We breakfast here.

Cofee Seeds
On our way we get to taste some Coffee Liqueur. It tastes great. Wonder if I could buy some but decide against it..
Entrance to Poas National Park
Our next stop is the Poas volcano . the volcano is 8200 feet above sea level and is surrounded by lush forests. Costa Rica belongs to the pacific ring of fire and so has about 117 odd volcanoes. The highest Costa Rica`s volcano is Irazu, the most active is Arenal and Poas has the second widest crater in the world. (diameter 1,5 kilometres).
Volcano Poas
The Mouth of the Crater..
It has three craters, only one is active. The active crater measures 1.k Km in diameter and is 300 m deep(900 feet). you can smell sulphur in the air. The crater looks ancient and black. The last major eruption happened in 1910. Ever since this crater has been spewing poisonous gases. Legend has it that the word Poes comes from a indigenous Indian Tribe
I was there..
At the Park
One of the craters is a lagoon filled with water and ambushed by lush green tropical forests

Quick Lunch and we then head to the La Paez Waterfall. Theres an Aviary here and it wonderful seeing all the birds. some like the toucan I've only seen on National Geographic and their curious pretty faces really made me smile.

The Butterfly farm was full of rioting colours. Caught a few on my camera

Humming Bird..

And Finally got to see the elusive Humming Bird..!

The Waterfall was really pretty. But I've seen far prettier ones back home in India. For me the greatest thing would always be standing by the smouldering volcano wondering what would happen if it erupts :)

Where the opening scene of Jurassic Park was shot..
On the way back we stopped by another waterfall. the opening scene in Jurassic Park is supposed to have been shot here.

Our Day ended with  a boat ride on one of the local rivers which connects Costa Rica to Nicaragua. Costa Rica is teeming with wildlife. The best way to seesome is by cruising through the river ecosystems.
Vultures feeding on a cow's Caracas
Very quickly we spotted vutures feeding on what looked like a Cow's carcas. I can't believe we are this close. They don't seem to care that we are around. they continue eating , indifferent to our presence.
Monkeys..
Alligators..

And then it poured for a couple of minutes.. The weather here is really capricious. We sat back in the boat watching ripples and hearing the rush of rain water coming down on the roof of the boat.
The boat ride ended and I was dropped back home..Tired and Exhausted ..But happy! :).
Wish everyday was as nice as this one

Costa Rica ..

Fri was crazy. Lots of paperwork at work. A quicker than usual lunch. Pav Baaji at Periamma's place was Yummy. Lots of hectic shopping. Of course Poonai came along to help. Lots of stuff on short notice. Even managed to grab a Baskin Robbins ice cream amidst all the chaos. Don't have a camera as yet...
Subu is at the IPL launch. Not sure if he'll be back in time. But am all packed finally and rechecking everything. Last minute phone calls :). Quick Crazy dinner.. And am all set.
Like to travel light. Flying Air France for the First time. Flight was not bad at all. 10 hours to Paris. But missed the flight to Caracas. Waited to get a transit Visa for a couple of hours at the airport. Finally I get it and get to the transit hotel. It's so cold. Its so Beautiful. Quaint, Pretty and so Lovely. Curse myself for not having a camera. Talk a walk around the hotel. I wish i had a camera. I really do wish I have a camera...
Chat for a while and another quick walk.. What time is it?.. Paris is only 3 and 1/2 hours behind us. Why did I think it was on the other side of the globe? Strange the things we assume..
I decide to take a quick nap... And when i get up its 3 in the morning..Hmm..
Quick Breakfast and to the airport...
Finally manage to get my camera.. Am in love with it..
9 and 1/2 more hours to Caracas. The airport is almost on the shore. Have a geologist for a co-passenger and he explains why the airport is perched on the beach and the topography of Venezuala.
All I hear is Spanish... Would love to learn Spanish... Just imagine one of these days am going to go all around South America along the route of the Motorcycle diaries.. :)... Do I need a license to dream?..Can't believe I haven't been air sick so far..
Get the Flight to San Jose... Well I spoke too soon.. Air sick the moment I put a little food in my mouth..Just can't wait to get to the hotel..
Finally am here.. Take a cab to the hotel.. Its sooooooooo Pretty...As usual first thing I do is check out the view. My room overlooks a golf course...
Well am here.. !

To Malaysia and Back..

Just got back from a quick visit to Malaysia. Didn't get to see much, in fact didn't get to see anything at all. Apart from that really enjoyed the trip and all the insights it gave me into Malaysia and who she really is. Getting to know a country is like getting to know a person. Many shades, Many hues and then the core.. You don't always have to go around seeing places. You could also get to know her by just staying there, talking to her people...

First Spoiler - 500 odd passengers , seated strapped to their seats. The plane makes its way to the run way and then a 15 min stop followed by an announcement. Apparently since the effort to move to the new Bangalore airport is under way, it had somehow (i cant see how) led to a shortage of trained personnel for moving baggage, and so the Plane made its way back , engines were turned off and the luggage was loaded.... Finally after a two hour delay , the plane took off.

Bangalore really needs to do something to alleviate the airport situation. Had to run to get my connecting flight before the gates closed in Singapore.

Second Spoiler - Land in Malaysia. Get a cab to the hotel. Hungry , Tired , Irritated, A nice hot shower, that's what I need I mentally decide ... And the receptionist smiles sweetly at me and says .." It will take another hour for us to get your room ready mam. You could have a complimentary drink at our coffee shop "..So I sit in the lounge, and wait and wait and wait.. One hour seems like ten when you are tired ..

Finally my bags were taken up and I was there. Of course they didn't let me have a sea side room . But this one was nice. First thing I did, Pulled aside the drapes ; loved the view...

Third Spoiler - Run to my bag . Want a picture of the view. Get my camera out. Turn it on and click.. Nothing!.. My camera stopped working .........:(:(:(:(:(

Good I got all the bad stuff out of the way..

Slow internet connection meant that I had the perfect excuse to not work once i get back everyday.

Some things about Penang..

Penang comes from the word 'Pinang' meaning 'beetle nut'.. wonderfully clean. Great Roads. Multi Racial - Malays , Chinese, Indians. Extremely friendly people - Loud and Loquacious.

My Hotel was right by the sea and I did manage to sneak a few beach side walks. The beach in Penang reminds me of the beach in Pondicherry. A fortification prevents you from going to the shore line and you can walk along the foot path built for pedestrians.

Every morning I need to get to Kulim. So my colleague and I take a cab to work. The Sun is a late riser in Penang and she sleeps late too.. We are out by 6:45 and we sneak past the sleeping sun. Our ride takes us through the beautiful 13 Km Penang Bridge. I am told that when the traffic gets too much Cars are ferried across. Those 30-40 mins are filled with conversation spanning over a wide variety of subjects These conversations were an eye opener in some ways. I learnt that there are some things which are far better in India than any where else in the world. I learnt that in the US if you need to get to the doctor you can't without medical insurance. When i asked.." What if you tell the doctor that i don't have insurance but I'll pay my bill".. I was shocked to hear that a simple visit could make you a 1000$ poorer in terms of paying just the consultation fee. Was even more shocked to hear that a family of 4 could very easily pay about 500$ a month as insurance and finally "What would you do if you were poor and you fell sick".. Bottom line - " If you don't have med insurance you dare not fall sick" .. !!

How many times have I paid paltry amounts like 50 rupees (approx 1 dollar) as consultation fees.Sometimes we don't seem to know what we have..

On one more ride was told about the ethnic conflict in Malaysia by the cab driver. He scared me a little by yelling at the top of his voice and condemning all those responsible for suppressing the rights of Immigrant Indians. I was aware of the ethnic conflict in Malaysia being a regular with the morning CNN IBN news. But news in a strange way can be misleading. Sometimes the Perspective it offers is too narrow. Sometimes it makes ordinary men and women seem like monsters. In order to really understand something you need to be at the place of the action, you need to hear the story on both sides of the dispute. On the outside I didn't really see any obvious signs of discontent. The friendly vibe between most people seemed to belie the simmering discontent and distrust underneath. Most Indian immigrants are Tamil, Their fore fathers had been brought there as labourers when Pre independent Malaysia was still a British Colony. Most of them are cab drivers, and they claim that several of the fundamental rights (like education) which should be theirs being Malay born had been denied to them.
Elections were round the corner and It was interesting to see the election scene in another country. There were no where close to being as noisy as ours. But the banners were out and I was told that the opposition party this year was in it's strongest position in fifty years.

There were some other interesting dynamics I observed among the cab drivers. The Chinese and Indians had formed two distinct groups. Business from corporates hinged on whom the receptionist chose to call. Like China the English here is extremely hard to understand. So some of these cab drivers have made a determined effort to improve spoken English skills. Here the Indians score over the Chinese.

Some quick shopping on Friday and Saturday it was time to leave. I had an eight hour transit at Singapore. Lunch first at Cauvery followed by Shopping. I love the Singapore airport. What struck me this time is How much attention to detail had been given to even the minutest of things . For instance Safety aspects were top class. The airport abounds in high tech gadgets and needless to say there are loads of kids running around. But all these equipment have been placed in such a way that there could be no obvious damage done to them and nobody would get hurt trying.

Finally we were on board the flight back to Bangalore and as luck would have it we were asked to get off as there was some technical snag in the flight that could not be rectified. Another two hour wait and finally I was back home. Cleared immigration quickly , but the worst was yet to come. Waiting for the bags was a nightmare. There would have easily been around 500 people on board my flight. The Thai airways flight had landed at the same time and what followed was utter chaos. The trolleys were in bad shape. They wouldn't move. And it was like being in a bad game of Bumper cars. Someone hit my leg atleast twice and I had a bad feeling that there would be a stampede. Somehow the bags arrived and then I had to figure out how to get out.

..Out of the airport and back homeeeeeeeeeee :):)..Back to my nest!! No place better in the world!

Chamarajanagar Trek (Dec 22 -23)

December 22
Even though I knew that I would be trekking 22, 23, there was nothing done towards this cause till the afternoon before. Discovered that my sleeping bag (Borrowed- so technically not mine) would not fit into any of my backpacks. In fact it was so bad that I looked like the hunch back of noterdam with a huge cushion jutting out of nowhere. Even after I got myself some decent travel gear, I was debating whether to leave the sleeping bag behind, but ended up lugging it along, A decision I would and wouldn’t regret…! We set off at 5:30 and after breakfast at Kamat, we finally reached Bedaguli at around 2:00. The Bumpy journey aggravated by an extra passenger who had to be accommodated in Mysore left us tired and Hungry.

Our Picteresque Lunch Spot

Just before the trek..
After lunch in a picturesque spot we were handed out food for the entire journey, each trekker for himself!! We also had to carry a mat (lightweight but adding to the bulk) which was fastened to each of our backpacks. This was followed by a ritual of applying a mixture of snuff and coconut oil - The leech repellent. Results proved that it was indeed very effective
We are off..
On our Way..
Backpack and all, we were finally on our way, quite literally an uphill task at first. In spite of the nagging weight the scenery along the way made it really enjoyable. The area we are trekking was once the lair of the notorious sandalwood smuggler Verappan. The trail 'Verappan Trails'  takes its name after him. In his heyday he had killed close to 184 people mostly policemen and forest officials and had held several people hostage for ransom. India is a land of great social inequality and Verappan saw himself as Robinhood, stealing from the rich and turning protector to the poor and needy. He had a lot of sympathisers among the local population in the surrounding villages. He was finally killed in 2004 by the special task force. But his death remains embroiled in conspiracy theories
On our way..
As we wound our way through , we finally found ourselves in this open expanse of land. Jodigere was out final stop. Perched right there was the place where we would stay for the night. I was a little dumbstruck by the bare surroundings and the abandoned look of the building. It was quite literally nothing but a roof over our heads. I could imagine what conditions the forest guards lived in.
We get there..The first few trekkers silhouted against the setting sun..
Took this snap against the sun and got this wonderful picture . Some of the first three trekkers who reached base silhouetted against the evening sun
Tired after the long trek, we sipped on hot coffee. Of course the kitchen was a small enclosure. Firewood logs fuelled the flames on which we were to cook our food for the night.
Coffee..
Utensils were washed outside. A solitary pipe brought water from a nearby source and hat was all. We had water, but only just;It was hard to imagine subsistence amidst this barer than minimum facilities
The View from our kitchen..
Spent some time clicking pictures . The rock seen featuring here was to serve as some sort of enclosure for our camp fire.
Time to relax..
Our Stay for the Night
After the hot drink, we setoff on a small nature trail to spot animals. Had the chance to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets. Something about a sunset always leaves you in awe. The colors changing aginst Natures Canvas
The Sun Sets..
The moon was out too today. She was out to outdo the sun. oh and did she..
Wondering if we can spot any animals..?
Lovely night to be out on a walk..

Our Camp Fire..
Dinner by a camp fire (which refused to stay up and retired earlier than all of us). Once done We spread out our sleeping bags and called it a day. It had gotten extremely chilly. The room was devoid of electricity. This was one place where Natures calls were Natures calls.

The Day Begins..
During the time we stayed there we did not see a single piece of plastic in sight. We on our part ensured that all traces of our stay were erased. Plastics, paper or anything that would normally be discarded were put into one big garbage bag . Morning Dawned. Hot coffee and breakfast and we were off.
The Entire Group..
..And one for the album!
We set off once again..
Climbing Down..Much Trickier than climbing up..
Antelopes..
Taking a break..
Lunch..
A well earned lunch very near the end...!

Finally we reached our destination- Bylore. My hands and legs felt like
they would come off any moment. After the commute back to Bangalore I have to admit that I was happy to be home. I thoroughly enjoyed the trek. It taught me something new and got me thinking on how the first men ever survived in a hostile environment. Some of the insights I will have to put aside to write, for another day.
